Belle of Broadcast

A student at the University of Mississippi, Sammie Foster shares her dream of sports broadcasting and is excited to work toward her goal.

Foster, a sophomore student at Ole Miss plans to graduate with a Journalism degree from the university and hopes to be the next Erin Andrews. Pushing towards her goal, Sammie is in search of the perfect internship to get the right experience she needs to land the job of her dreams. Growing up in Virginia, Foster found her love for journalism by interviewing friends, family and others from her hometown.

“I like to talk to people I don’t know so I started interviewing people about certain topics that interest me and I decided on sports because it is what I enjoy the most”, Foster said.

Although Foster grew up in Virginia, she is an adopted southern belle now that she is a student at Ole Miss. This southern belle found her passion for speaking with people publicly and personally at a young age and came to the University of Mississippi with one goal in mind. Foster has a love for sports that not many girls have.

“I grew up playing sports and I definitely think that sparked my interest a lot” she shared. “I would love to be a broadcaster for any sport but basketball and football are definitely my favorite and most interesting to watch”, Foster said.

Sports broadcast requires a certain skill and ability to keep the fans and listeners in tune and intrigued. Foster realizes that it is not only a fun job but it is a lot of work to balance the game and surroundings while conveying it to the fans and listeners.

“Sports broadcasting is a job that involves a lot of multitasking and energy”, she said “It will be challenging but it is something I am really looking forward to”.

Going through a lot of adversity, the University of Mississippi, fans are let down once again. Students all over campus were talking about how they have faith in the rebels and they know since its Homecoming the rebels will play hard, fight through adversity, and get the win; sad part is that they didn’t.
Saturday night the Ole Miss rebels played Louisiana Tech with hope that they would win their Homecoming game. They knew the win would mean a lot to them, the school, and mostly their biggest supporters, their fans. Even after lost after lost the fans still support the rebels.
A lot of the students on campus who had faith in the rebels came to support them, and a lot of people didn’t show up. Noticing how empty the stands were, I knew that this would be the first “heartbreak homecoming”. I say this because the football team, feeds off of the fans, and energy the crowd gives, and with an almost empty stadium it really frustrated the team.
Louisiana Tech came to Oxford with one thing on their minds, and that was to destroy the rebels on their Homecoming night. The game started, and Louisiana Tech was making plays after plays frustrating the rebels with back to back touchdowns and drives. The final score of the game was 27-7 La. Tech upset the rebels.
After the game, the team was all upset, because they couldn’t get the win for Homecoming night. It hurt them, because everyone knows your suppose to win all homecoming games no matter who’s the competition. Another reason the rebels were mad, is because they feel that they have now lost majority of their fans, which is friends, and fellow classmates. Only thing they can do is prepare for next week’s game.
Although the rebels received a huge lost on homecoming they still manage to place all of the adversity behind them. They have begun practicing again, and get themselves physically and mentally prepared for next week’s game against LSU. The rebels are still trying to convince everyone that they haven’t given up yet, because they still have a point to prove.

Abortion is one of the most controversial subjects ever. This is especially true right now in Mississippi, where a law that would declare abortion “murder” was rejected by the state in Tuesday’s voting. Many people are and were affected by this decision. Is it murder? Is it right? Is it wrong? When is a fertilized egg to be classified as “human”? This is certainly not anything new to the world, it was initially illegal, but that was overturned in the Roe v. Wade case of 1973 where it was decided that under the fourteenth amendment the right of privacy extends to a woman’s decision on whether or not to have an abortion. While this case was decided long ago, abortion is still a huge issue and it is in fact illegal in some states. The main antagonists of this decision were people who were looking at this with more of a moral eye. Murder is murder, no matter what the circumstances. Many Christians cited that “God makes no mistakes” referencing to the protagonists’ offering a side as to why it should be legal citing if a woman was perhaps sexually assaulted and conceived. This decision affects all the people of Mississippi, a student at Ole Miss shares her view of the initiative. Charmeka Singleton, Sophomore Forensic Chemistry major stated that “ I knew that it wasn’t going to pass because that’s taking away people’s right.” That is most likely the views of  many people in Mississippi. However, on a more personal note, she clarified “I personally am against abortion and felt as though the amendment didn’t affect me.” The many views and opinions expressed on this subject are logical on both sides, and the decision has been made. Although one can’t help knowing that this is not the end of this struggle between morals and ethics.
