Tuesday November 8, 2011, The University of Mississippi’s Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority hosted a philanthropy event at their house on campus. Students, faculty, and people of the Oxford community were able to purchase tickets for only $5 to eat barbecue at the Kappa house. Ticket sales went towards the sorority’s philanthropy, Reading Is Fundamental.
“BBQ For Books is a great event because we help raise money to buy books for local school in the Lafayette county area and help save money for our annual trip to Africa,” Philanthropy Chair, Morgan Doyle said.
Pork Fiction catered the BBQ For Books event at the Kappa House where they served barbecue sandwiches, baked beans, cole slaw, and dessert. Kids were able to get their faces painted by girls in the sorority as well.
“I’m an assistant teacher for an elementary school here in Oxford and I get to see, first-hand, the excitement on these kids faces from just getting new books,” elementary education major and member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Amy Skelton said.
BBQ For Books is an annual event held on campus by Kappa Kappa Gamma. Besides BBQ For Books, they also host a spaghetti dinner with fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Also they host Kappa Karnival in the Grove where families from the Oxford community can come play games and other various activities. All proceeds go towards their philanthropy, Reading Is Fundamental.
Members of the sorority are also given the chance to travel to Africa and read to the kids there. This past summer students, Katherine Russell and Leigh Kaiser helped out kids in Africa and supported Reading Is Fundamental.
