Outrageous Parking Tickets
Kenyotta Jenkins
Jour 102
The University of Mississippi is home of the Rebels on a pretty campus, and plenty of support from the fans. The current problem the University has is parking. This year there are more commuters on campus so that means there are less parking places which is causing more tickets handed out. Ticketing is only the big problem during game days and school days which cause students not to drive on campus, and it puts UPD to work. This is causing a dilemma because there are barely parking places so students’ park anywhere they want too.
UPD is the University’s Police Department that gives most of the tickets out on campus. The UPD knows about the crazy parking on campus so they are already prepared for a hectic day of constantly giving out tickets. On campus the two places the most tickets are being given is the Fed- Ex and the Coliseum Parking lot. Since there are barely places to park people park in handicap places and park in the grass which gives the UPD reasons to ticket them.
Most of the tickets are not that expensive, but still no one wants a ticket billed to their account and no one wants to pay for an unreasonable ticket. Some of the UPD officers will give you warnings about parking in certain places and others will not say anything they will just hand you the ticket. The cheapest ticket that has been written is only $15, while the highest is between $50-$150. The big catch behind the tickets is if you don’t pay the tickets on time UPD will give you a boot or you car will get towed; you will have to spend more money not only paying your ticket off, but getting your car back.
When there are football games on campus it gets extremely packed and UPD is everywhere scoping to give tickets. There was one case where someone had a parking permit and still received a ticket. On game days the campus every parking lot is packed and once again people begin to park in the grass because they have no where to park.
When commuters park on campus for class its totally different then the football games because there are some places to park, not a lot but you don’t have to park in unnecessary parking places. Commuters normally are off the hook when it just a regular class day because once someone else leaves there is a place to park, but on a game day it is different ; no one can leave because it’s so packed and then people fight over parking places.
Since students continue to receive foolish tickets on game days and just for parking on campus, they are complaining a lot to UPD about letting up on the parking tickets. The tickets have gotten so bad that a lot of students are riding the buses that come through campus to avoid the outrageous parking and tickets.
“It’s sad at all the tickets we give out daily, sometimes I don’t want to give them out but it all a part of my job so I have too “, said Officer Wesley Smith. “ Game days is really when the parking gets outrageous and I have no choice but to write someone a ticket.”
